Verdecoprente Artistic Residencies at the Festival – fourth edition
“The Sceene Unveiled by the Landscape”
The Verdecoprente project (in itself a landscape) evolves in the Umbrian countryside, amidst the hills and hamlets of Alviano Amelia Giove Guardea Lugnano in Teverina and Montecchio. The project is defined by forms, aesthetics and poetry of the contemporary scene: theatre, dance, performance and also multidisciplinary photography, video and narration. Its view extends beyond the boundaries of artistic genres, oscillating between nature and the man-made world, between matter and virtuality, between the product of the land and of man, between ancient and contemporary stories of people and places, between voices and silence, opening to the public new ways of experiencing artistic creation, experiencing it together with its author. It came to life thanks to the willpower of Roberto Giannini and Rossella Viti (who celebrate their 20th anniversary of residence in Umbria) to promote the creative research of the contemporary scene and the arts by means of a dialogue with the territory. Verdecoprente intends to create, to speak with Eugenio Turri, a “landscape that becomes theatre” finding a “theatre that becomes landscape” within its own capacity to re-write the relations that nourish it.
The artistic residencies are the core of the project. They are being shared by an ever growing collective vision and get support from a complex network of associations, citizens and companies, an inter-municipal network that puts the artistic work at the centre of a system that appreciates the professional path, the creative process and its value of relationship with the land that host it.
There are eight companies of the contemporary scene in residency with Verdecoprente and they will elaborate their artistic project that has been selected via an internationally announced competition. After a period of rehearsals at designated spaces the companies will present their work to the public, a work that we call „restitution“, a performance of 20 to 30 minutes or slightly more. Thus we may see its result in its momentary form before it will evolve further at another residency. In a certain way the ‘restitution‘ of an artist in residency is an absolutely unique occasion for being a unique spectacle that will never be the same again, an experience that needs to be caught in the present moment. The present moment is the focus of investigation of 2015’s projects. This is applies to the residencies as much as to the `Latent Territories‘, projects that have been developed in connection with photography that meander and amplify our view on the world of contemporary artistic creation. They all collect the profound tensions of our time pushing the research for original and creative ways that they elaborate in the surrounding landscape that hosts them. Thus theatre, dance, photography and performance return on stage as `narrations‘ that don’t belong any more exclusively to the artist who created them. They transform into `places‘ that unite the intimacy of work and the shared moments with the community of spectators. Verdecoprente is a living organism that moves within the relation to its own habitat. This way the scene in its different surrounding landscapes may slowly be unveiled by following the natural rhythm of respiration of every itinerary.
